Description of this breed

Dachshunds are scent hound dog breeds who were bred to hunt badgers and other tunneling animals, rabbits, and foxes. Packs of Dachshunds were even used to trail wild boar. Today their versatility makes them excellent family companions, show dogs, and small-game hunters.

Half a dog high and a dog and a half long

H. L. Mencken

This small long dog is indeed small in size, but he is strong enough to hunt a badger. If you translate his name, you will see why.

Dachs = badger – hund = dog.

So dachshund means the badger dog.

There are 3 different types of this breed:

  • The long-haired: crossing with spaniels and Irish setters
  • The wire-haired: crossing with various terriers and the Schnauzer
  • The short-haired: original type

And there are 3 different sizes:

  • Standard (chest size over 35 cm with a weight up to 9 kg)
  • Dwarf (chest circumference of 30 to 35 cm, with a weight ranging between 6 and 7 kg)
  • Kaninchen (chest circumference up to 30 cm, with a weight varying between 4 and 5 kg)

The dachshund dog is a powerful, well-behaved dog with short legs. It behaves proudly and has an intelligent expression. It has an extended head, a long snout, robust jaws. The teeth in scissors bite with extremely strong fangs (They usually have 42 teeth). His eyes are oval, dark red or brown-black with an energetic and friendly expression. His ears are long and hanging on his cheeks. Their body should have a strongly protruding sternum and a moderately contracted belly. The fur of the dachshund should be shiny, smooth and uniform. Two-tone dachshunds have a coat with areas of bright maroon and deep-black, brown, or gray.

Character and temperament

The dachshunds are sociable family dogs but are also hunting dogs with great stamina. They also make good watchdogs.
The breed is not an obedient dog by nature, but with the right obedience training you can raise your dog. He is an intelligent, resourceful dog, and they have a curious and courageous character.

Character traits of short-, wire- and long-haired dachshund

The short haired dachshund has the most specific characteristics. They are very affectionate dogs.
The wirehaired dachshund is often a temperamental, energetic and extraverted dog due to the terrier input.
The long-haired dachshund is a somewhat calmer and gentle type.

They are lively, affectionate and proud dogs. Not only that, but they are very devoted to their family.
And they are good dogs to travel with.

They are at their best with older children. They generally get along well with other pets. They are quickly jealous and when they get irritated they can bite.

The dachshund can act wonderfully to get his way. They consciously seek eye contact. A puppy course is recommended. When this breed is grown up, it becomes a very loyal dog.

Living conditions

Dachshunds are suitable for flat living. They are quite active inside and will do well without a garden. These are active dogs with surprising endurance, and they like a regular walk or a game in the park.

They should not be overfed, because this dog breed tends to be overweight.

Care of this dog

The long-haired variety requires a daily combing or brushing. The rough-haired needs a semi-annual trim. Clean the short hair once in a while with a damp cloth.

Dachshunds are known to have vertebral problems because of their long back. This dog is not such a good choice for those who have a house with many stairs. To further protect their back, the dog should not jump on and off furniture and his weight should be monitored.

Origin and history

Short-legged dogs are already depicted in ancient Egyptian and Greek temples and in Chinese art. Dachshunds would be descendants of the oldest German Hunting Dog breeds, such as the Bibarhund or the German Beagle. On illustrations from the 13th century, the ancestors of the dachshund can be seen in the hunt for badgers. They will have changed a little since then, but the fact this breed has existed for hundreds of years does not doubt anyone.

This breed was bred to hunt and to follow badgers in their burrows under the ground. With their short legs, they dug out the badgers and followed them into their den. For that, he has an excellent nose and excellent hearing. The smaller dachshunds were bred to hunt for hares. The Teckel has many “terrier” characteristics. They are versatile and courageous dogs and are known to go after foxes and otters, as well as badgers.

In 1888, the German breed club was established for the short-haired variety. In 1880 the first breed standard was established in the United Kingdom. The dachshund quickly spread and became a valued companion dog worldwide.

The shag was created by crossings with the Dandie Dinmont Terrier and other terriers, the long-haired crosses of the short-haired dachshunds with the Cocker Spaniel and the Stoberhund (an old German hunting dog).

Hoi hoi hoi

Vandaag wordt ik al 1 jaar!!! 🎉

Fay 😘
