American Staffordshire Terrier

Posted on

Alternative Names:

Am Staff

Country of Origin:

U.S.

History:

Although it descends from the same line as the APBT, the American Staffordshire has been bred independently of the APBT for at least 60 years when the AKC changed the breed name. A result of English crossing of bulldogs and terriers, descendants of the breed were brought to the U.S. in the late 1800s and used as general-purpose farm dogs.

Physical Description:

It is very much like the APBT: medium-size, compact, stocky and muscular, with a broad skull, medium-length muzzle and strong jaw. The eyes are dark and round and the ears are cropped erect or naturally rose or semi-erect. Natural ears are preferred. The American Staffordshire Terrier has a broad, deep chest and muscular hindquarters. The naturally short tail tapers to a point. The coat is short and stiff and of any color but all white.

Height:

17 to 19 inches

Weight:

40 to 79 pounds

Temperament:

The American Staffordshire terrier is gentle and friendly but also stoic and courageous. It is very friendly toward people, especially children, but often aggressive toward dogs, especially those of the same sex. Many Am Staffs will only get along with dogs of the opposite sex.

Activity Level:

High

Best Owner:

The best owner is an active, experienced family or individual either in the city or the country.

Special Needs:

Exercise, fenced yard, leashed, socialization and training.

The Chihuahua-Beagle Mix

Posted on

The Beagle Chihuahua mix, also called "Cheagle", is a very brave and dignified dog. Like a Chihuahua, he believes he can handle everything and sometimes he behaves like he's ready to take a bulldog down! Jealous and protective around his loved ones, he likes and requires a lot of attention. These dogs are generally great barkers. The quality of his bark will depend on whether he inherited the Chi's Yap or the Beagle's Bay. They are small and can be fragile like the Chi or firmer. Expect them to be loving, stubborn and quirky. Chihuahuas are intolerant to pests, so they are not good companions for children; Beagles are calm and much more tolerant. Cheagles can inherit a characteristic or a mix, so it is safe to assume that they are not child-friendly until proven otherwise.

They are usually small, although not as small as the Chi, of course. Expect the dog will grow to between 9 and 20 pounds.

Like Beagles, Cheagles enjoy daily walks and exercise and are fond of running. Their portable size makes them reliable travel companions. Hope your animal inherit the intelligence of the Chihuahua; Beagles are incredibly sweet, but they have hunting brains, hunting and smelling all, and don't think much after. If your Cheagle gets the Chi-brain, he or she will be much easier to train.

Care: They need you to provide their basic needs, firm discipline and affection in that order.

  • Make sure to keep a Cheagle like a Chihuahua in terms of keeping him warm. Always choose good quality food (read the labels, not just the brand name or price) and take care of clean water. Perform vaccinations, boosters and control of flea and worm. At junctions, the genetic weaknesses that pedigree dogs suffer are usually eliminated. Since both breeds have a higher than normal incidence of glaucoma, epilepsy, tracheal collapse and patellaproblemen, please note here.
  • Train them softly, firmly, early and constantly. Do not let them develop nasty habits; They won't understand it later if people don't want to spend time with them. Let them know what you expect and continue to maintain the rules and reward good behavior. Like a child, a dog wants to be safe in knowing what will happen and what he needs to do and not do.
  • They like love. They dig under the blankets, sleep on your lap and follow you through the house. Do not get this pet if you are 5 or 6 long days a week out of home without them. They want company, attention and interaction, and they will find ways to entertain themselves if no one else is available to play…

Many people report that their Cheagle has the loving personality and aggressive loyalty that divides the races. Be careful about supervising your dog when guests come to visit, especially children, or when introducing other animals. Like any dog, the Cheagle is happiest when he or she spends a lot of time with his or her people.

dog-training – housebreaking-issues

Posted on

The process of housebreaking often brings on feelings of nervousness and worry, but the process does not have to be stressful—for you or the puppy.

The truth is this is a situation in which you have Mother Nature working with you right from the start while puppy training. When the puppies are first born, they eat and they relieve themselves inside the den, but the mother always cleans them. There is never a scent of urine or feces where the puppies eat, sleep, and live. When they get old enough, they learn to use outside areas as they imitate their mother. read more
