Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a Pomsky?

The price of a Pomsky varies between 1750 and 3000 €

What is the Pomsky’s Official Name?

The official name of this dog breed is “Pomsky”

What is its origin?

Its development mainly takes place in England and the United States and has entered the sphere of social networks.

Which FCI group is he part of?

The Pomsky is not officially recognized, neither in Belgium, nor by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale because the breed is still too recent.

What is the history of the Pomsky?

The Pomsky is the result of the cross between two breeds: the Siberian Husky and the dwarf Spitz, also known as the Pomeranian, hence the name. There are three types that correspond to the dosage of the cross. So there is a Pomsky with 75% Pomeranian, another 50% and the last 25%, and vice versa with the percentage of  Husky  in the cross.

How much does a Pomsky weigh?

The Pomsky weighs on average between 9 and 14 kg.

How tall is a Pomsky?

The height at the withers can vary between 25 and 38 cm, knowing that the puppies in the same litter can be different. You should be noted that the physical characteristics of this new breed or fad are not yet an official standard. So many variations are possible as the breed has not yet been established as it is still too recent.

What is his hair type?

Its coat is generally medium length.

What is her color?

This small dog is generally two-colored. We can find the different colors of the Husky: black, white, gray, fawn or brown.

What is the character of the Pomsky?

The breed is not yet established, nor is his character. But it’s a safe bet that crossing two rather primitive breeds will produce a dog with a strong character. Putting the characteristics of the two breeds together, we can easily guess that this Miniature Husky will be a loyal but somewhat independent dog, playful, intelligent but not necessarily very docile.

How do you raise a Pomsky?

Raising this Husky looking keeshond (or vice versa) will not be an easy task given the nature of his parents. It is indeed advisable to start training very early, as soon as the puppy arrives at your home. If you wait, he can pick up bad habits, and it can be difficult to restore balance. It is better to learn rather than unlearn to relearn. This little dog is stubborn by nature and can easily lose focus, especially when the educational methods don’t suit him.

Description

The Pomsky is a beloved designer dog. Hybrid of the Siberian Husky and Pomeranian.
Because this Designerdog has not been around for very long, there are no fixed standards yet. It will also take a few years before these forms and standards are established, so it will take a while before it is recognized as a breed.

At this point, Pomskies can vary widely in appearance and temperament, even within the same litter, so it is unlikely that breed standards will come any time soon. If you are interested in purchasing a Pomsky, please contact Woefkesranch

The Pomsky’s thick coat makes him resistant to cold, tougher than most other small lapdogs.
Pomskies are highly adaptable, don’t have great space requirements, and have only moderate exercise needs, making them good household dogs.
The breed’s coat comes in a variety of colors, just like the original breeds.
Pomskies are vocal dogs that have a tendency to howl, or bark if not properly trained.
Socialization with other dogs and people is important, especially at a young age.
Pomskies are very eager to learn but can inherit some stubbornness from the Siberian Husky, so a disciplined upbringing is recommended.

The Pomsky is a small to medium-sized dog that falls somewhere between the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky parents of the breed. There is some variation in size as breeding standards are not firmly established.

Highlights

  • The Pomsky’s thick coat makes him more tolerant of cold weather than most other lapdog types.
  • Pomskies are very flexible, don’t have major space requirements, and have only moderate exercise needs, making them good apartment dogs.
  • The breed’s coat comes in a variety of colors, just like the parent breeds.
  • Pomskies are vocal dogs that tend to cheer when not properly trained.
  • Socialization with other dogs and people is important.
  • Pomskies are highly trainable, but can inherit some stubbornness from the Siberian Husky.

Size

The Pomsky is a small to medium-sized dog that falls somewhere between the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky in size. There is some variation in size as breed standards are not firmly established, but it is fairly safe to assume that a Pomsky will not weigh much over 18 kilograms when fully grown, which is on the higher side of Pomsky weight.

Personality

The Pomsky is somewhat of a comedian and tends to know that his adorable antics will gain a lot of admiration from human onlookers. They are very adaptable to change, and their moderate exercise needs make them quite suitable for apartment living, as long as they can exercise well on a daily basis such as going for a walk. That said, they do tend to inherit their Husky parent’s talkative howling and nagging tendencies, along with their Pomeranian parents’ tendency to yelp. This makes them very noisy dogs that can get on the nerves of the neighbors. They often shed too, so be prepared to find hair everywhere and have some lint rollers and a vacuum cleaner handy.

Pomskies tend to cling to one favorite family member, although they may get along with all the people in the household. Socialization is very important and should start at a young age. Pomskies can be nervous around strangers if not properly socialized.

Health

It has been said that designer dogs are stronger in health. This is a very good reason to choose a healthy dog such as a Pomsky. Although there are few health problems in crossbreed dogs, there is always a small chance that your dog will have problems.

Pomskies can develop the common health problems of both its Husky and Pomeranian parents. They are genetically predisposed to conditions such as allergies, hip dysplasia, dislocated knees (luxating patellas), eye problems, epilepsy, heart disease, collapsing trachea and skin problems, among other problems. They are also particularly prone to dental problems, so regular teeth cleaning is important.

Strong and weak points

A worthy descendant of the Husky, his miniature version is just as robust as he is. Indeed, despite its small size and fragile appearance, the Pomsky can withstand bad weather without any problems.

However, don’t let him sleep outside either …

Life expectancy

Like all mixed dogs, life expectancy is usually quite long. Here she could go up to 15 years.

Vaccines and wormer

There is no mandatory vaccine specific to this breed. However, we recommend that you have your dog vaccinated against distemper, parvovirus and kennel cough, which are necessary to make dog encounters essential for the dog’s well-being.

The rabies vaccine is only compulsory if you go abroad.

We recommend regular worming until the dog is one year old. And then twice a year.

Medical predisposition

Since the breed is still very recent, we have little insight into the common diseases and possible pathologies to be aware of in this breed.

Indeed, when new varieties are created, it takes time to discover the potential problems caused by the crossing.

Grooming

Pomskies have moderate exercise needs that should be met with one good walk or half an hour of romp a day. They can have a lot of energy and may need some extra play sessions before relaxing.

Their thick coat makes Pomskies suitable for cold weather, so prepare to pack them up and take them outside all year round. They also do well with toys that stimulate them mentally, as Pomskies are intelligent dogs that can get bored if not challenged.

Training can be difficult as some Pomskies inherit stubbornness from the Siberian Husky, but they should be okay with learning new things if you give them food motivators and a lot of credit.

Nutrition

Pomskies are high energy dogs and require a diet that meets their needs. Because no breed standards have been set, it is difficult to say with certainty what individual dogs will need to eat. Typically, they require a diet suitable for a small to medium-sized dog. Always buy a quality brand of dog pellet and never buy the cheapest food they have at the pet store.

Coat color and grooming

Pomskies have a soft, fluffy double coat that requires a lot of brushing to maintain. The thick coat keeps them very comfortable in cold temperatures. Pomskies tend to shed a lot of fur, and while brushing helps, you can still expect to find her around the house. Coat colors vary, as do the Pomeranian and Husky parents of the breed. They are available in gray and white, brown or reddish brown, blue, pure white and more. Nails need to be trimmed a few times a year.

Education

Children and other pets

It is important that they are well socialized, so they can get along with children and most other pets. But they also get along well with other dogs, especially if raised with them, although the high prey drive they inherit from the Husky means they may like to chase smaller animals such as cats. It’s best to socialize them early, especially if you plan on having them in a household with children or other pets.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Pomsky

The main strength of the Pomsky is unfortunately also its weakness. Indeed, this dog is extremely intelligent, but this trait quickly turns to mischief to thwart his master’s educational efforts.

How do you start the training of a Pomsky?

If it is a puppy

Once he arrives, establish clear, coherent and fair rules of life so that the puppy understands there are boundaries that should not be crossed for his safety and that of others.

The educational bases should also be initiated as early as possible, through positive methods (walking on a leash without pulling, recall, and static postures).

If it’s an adult

Adopting an adult dog is sometimes difficult because you are dealing with his past, which is sometimes quite vague. But nothing is impossible, you have to adapt to your dog so that he can integrate into his new family as good as possible.

By engaging an educator

Go to a dog educator

If you are an inexperienced master, nothing serious! Enlist a professional dog trainer to guide you through the first steps. This makes it possible not to make mistakes and to adapt as good as possible to his dog.

But be careful, you need to find the right teacher who has the same values as you. Feel free to change if you don’t feel comfortable with his methods.

Consult a dog trainer online

Many problems can be managed with remote educational assistance.

Using training created by a professional dog trainer

The solution that offers the best value for money is one that combines the advice of an educator with the fact that you are educating your dog yourself. For this, there is the well-known technique “train your dog in 15 minutes a day” that you can discover.

What costs should you expect?

Price for a puppy

If you want to adopt a Pomsky, I recommend that you start saving now, because whoever says “fashionable dog” means “very expensive dog”. Indeed, it costs between 1750 and 4000 euros.

Maintenance costs

The maintenance cost won’t be very important, though, as although more like the Husky, the Pomsky will keep roughly the size of the Pomeranian.

A range between 20 and 30 euros per month, including quality feed and all classic (bi) annual care (vaccines, antiparasitic products, dewormers, etc.) is to be expected.

Insurance for a Pomsky

Prices for this type of dog can vary greatly from one to the other. The best way to get an idea is to use this  free dog insurance comparator.

Who is this dog breed made for?

Here’s some food for thought to find out if the Pomsky variety is right for you.

What living conditions is a Pomsky made for?

This little dog can easily adapt to city life. However, if you live in an apartment, you should not neglect the daily walks at the risk of finding a lot of nonsense at home.

But this dog can also evolve in the countryside, in a house with a garden where he can come and go as he pleases. Beware, having a garden does not justify a reduction or even omission of walks!

Sportsmanship and activity level of the Pomsky

If we combine the Pomeranian’s hyperactivity with the Husky’s very important spending needs, despite its small size, the Pomsky also needs plenty of exercise to be fully satisfied.

If you only offer him walks around the neighborhood once or twice a week, he will quickly become frustrated, and it can then become very difficult to make ends meet at home.

The Pomsky will not necessarily be easy to educate, as he has a fairly assertive nature and a degree of independence.

In addition, he is easily distracted, it is necessary to find important sources of motivation to maintain his concentration.

Compatibility with children

Despite its appearance, the Pomsky is not a soft toy, so children should be taught what dog codes are, how to respect a dog, and most importantly, know how to leave it alone when it is resting.

This small dog with a strong character, even though he is very playful, can quickly lose patience and not accept the cruelty, the sounds and the excitement that can cause children, especially the little ones.

Living with other animals

This miniature dog’s predatory instinct remains almost intact, as does one of its parents, the Husky. In fact, small pets are not necessarily welcome, like cats, for example.

However, if proper socialization is done as soon as the puppy gets home, cohabitation can sometimes be possible.

Pet boarding for your Pomsky

Small in size and fairly social with his peers, you can easily find someone to take care of your dog.

However, I recommend that it be kept by a counselor or a family pension; and not a “kennel” pension.

Accessories adapted to the Pomsky

To sleep

A basket adapted to its size and / or a box (inner niche) to make it feel safer.

Walk

A flat collar, a 1-meter leash for the city and a 5-meter leash for outings in nature. Preferably no harness, as this promotes hard pulling by not being able to correct with a harness.

Toys

Choose resistant occupational toys like Kong or wooden toys that dogs love. Personally, I have stopped buying stuffed animals or plastic toys because for the most destructive dogs, the toy budget quickly becomes significant.
