History:
The Shiba Inu is the smallest and oldest of the Japan's native breeds. It was bred to flush birds and small game and was occasionally used to hunt wild boar. It has great cultural significance in Japan and is considered a natural monument. It came close to extinction after WW II. Most Shiba Inu are now kept as pets. It was first brought to the U.S. in 1954.

 

Physical Description:

The Shiba Inu is a foxy, medium-size, compact, and well muscled dog that is slightly longer than it is tall. It had a broad head with dark, upward-slanting eyes; a black nose; and small, erect ears. It is double coated with a dense outer coat in red, sesame (black-tipped hairs on a red background), or black with tan points. The undercoat is cream, buff or gray.

13.5 to 16.5 inches

 

Weight:

15 to 25 pounds

 

Temperament:

The Shiba Inu is an alert, curious, intelligent dog with a lively, fun-loving personality. It is independent and know to wander.

 

Activity Level:

Moderate

This breed does well with an active owner in a city, suburban, or rural home.
